The Object - Το Αντικείμενο, Ιστορίες και αναπαραστάσεις

This exhibition completes the presentation of Cypriot artists born between 1949 and 1964. The first thematic unit, titled The Body: Stories and Representations, was hosted in 2010. The present exhibition’s theme is The Object: Stories and Representations. Cypriot artists born between 1949 and 1964 (Part II).
Upon their first appearance on the Cypriot scene in the 1980s, these artists contributed to helping Cyprus come out of its isolation and the stagnation it was experiencing after the 1974 events. The establishment of certain important art galleries and their active involvement in the arts, as well as the renewed participation of Cyprus in international events after a long pause, like the Venice Biennale, generated enthusiasm and creative activity. Some artists, including some of the most significant representatives of Cypriot art, who had an active presence abroad and had been thoroughly informed of current trends in art, contributed greatly to the creation of a new arts scene in Cyprus and laid the foundations for today’s artistic expressions.
The exhibition examines the ways in which the participating artists dealt with the ‘object’, using various means and techniques (boards, sculpture, large scale in situ installations, assemblages, video) and with its projection either as a simple motif or as a found object (objet trouvé), an integral part of an installation or of an environment in a particular space, going as far as doubting and redefining its place in the field of art.
